I like to compare a website to an automobile. The good ones are really nice to look at, and even more enjoyable to drive. When you’re looking at purchasing one, you get to choose the details of how it will look, what engine goes in it, how many speakers, leather or cloth, et cetera. All those details are fun to think about and decide on. The reality is that at the end of the day, no matter how the car looks, you expect it to get you where you want to go. If your business requires you to travel, do you want a poorly built car or a nice one?
What I see a lot is that people try to build their own car! Or they have their friend or neighbor build their car for them because it’s free or inexpensive. I’m sure that works out sometimes, but we get many calls about the times it doesn’t.
The difference between a car and a website though, is that when your car isn’t working right, you know it immediately because you cant start it; or worse you’re stuck on the side of the road! If a website isn’t helping you convert visitors to customers that’s a more difficult thing to realize.
It’s best to have a website built and designed such that you will get a return on your investment. Money and time spent on something that doesn’t work is wasted. If you make an investment in a company that will get things right from the start, you’ll start making money with your product or service sooner, therefore getting the return on the money you spent quicker. That’s a much better scenario than the first. Personally, I’d prefer to spend money on assets rather than liabilities.
There’s a reason that companies like Consumer Reports and Yelp exist. It’s to help you, the customer, make sure you’re getting your monies worth. The morale of this story is that you get what you pay for. Many people have a website built. Don’t just have a site built, but have your website designed right to promote your brand and function like an employee working for you 24/7!
